10 Employee Survey Questions to Use in Your Employment Branding Campaign - Workology

10 Employee Survey Questions to Use in Your Employment Branding Campaign - Workology 10 Employer Branding Social Recruiting Questions to Ask Your Employees At its simplest level, employer branding is defined according to Universum as the process of promoting a company or an organization as the employer of choice to a desired target group, one which a company needs and wants to recruit and retain. One important distinction not mentioned in this official definition, is that employer branding is developed from your employees. It is not created or developed by your executive leadership, outside consultants or marketing. An employer brand is developed and driven by the employee population, based on the characteristics, benefits, culture or nuances of the organization that are most important to them and contribute to employees deciding to  remain working at your company. What is Employer Branding? Employer branding is an employee developed concept, however, it doesnt mean that organizational leaders cant work with the employee population to understand what resonates with either the employee population at large or the small segment you are looking at evaluating and measuring. Universum, goes on to explain the employer branding process includes four distinct areas: 1) Understand, 2) Plan, 3) Execute, and 4) Measure. Employer branding is a new concept and many of us are just like you, in the beginning stages, dipping our toes into the employment branding waters. Or maybe you are looking at re-evaluating your recruitment or employee engagement efforts. Surveys, focus group meetings and one on one conversations are all great ways to research as part of the Understand step of your employer brand process. 10 Employer Branding Social Recruiting Questions to Ask Your Employees At present, Im currently in the Understand phase of building an employment brand with a client. Were evaluating their social recruitment efforts to better understand the social media channels. I want to know  how, why and when we should be engaging our talent, using social media platforms as part of the broader talent acquisition strategy. I also want to provide some context and direction for organizational leaders and individual recruiters as to what the channels and online communities their recent hires and current staff is spending time socially online. The complete survey was 15 questions. There were 10 questions for employees who had worked for my client for more than 6 months and an additional 5 questions for new hires who had joined the organization within the last 180 days (6 months). What is your job role?  Create a simple list of job categories to better understand where employees self-identify themselves in. This data is important once you being slicing and dicing your survey results by job roles to ensure the best candidate engagement and targeting online. What company value resonates with you most and why.  This is a great way to further understand the importance of the employer brand and what value gets your team most excited about coming to work. Use this information in your retention strategy and company storytelling. Provide three words that best describe your employer.  Ask your team for descriptive words. Pop these words into a simple word bubble tool like Wordle.com to get a nice visual representation of what your employer brand looks like directly from your employees. Rank what social media sites you are active on for PERSONAL USE from most to least.  Its important to understand the differences in the activity and use of social media by your employee population. Rank what social media sites you are active on for PROFESSIONAL USE from most to least.  I what to know what social media sites my employees are using so I can determine if there are correlations between LinkedIn and sales professionals or Snapchat and administrative staff. Rank what social media sites you are active on for YOUR JOB SEARCH from most to least.  In my survey, I created a yes or no question asking the employees if they had been hired in the last six months. If they answered yes, they were directly to a set of specific job search specific questions. My mobile phone was an important part of my job search. One of my job search specific questions to find out exactly how my recent hires were relying on their mobile during their most recent job search. How did you hear about our company during your job search?  The source of hire question is always a tricky one. Depending on if you have a drop down menu versus cookies to track candidates activities, its hard to pinpoint where the candidate came from. Source of hire could be subjective especially if you consider that a candidate has a number of touchpoints before they complete a job application. I spend how much time using social media for PROFESSIONAL USE each month.  I want to understand how much time theemployee population is spending time for professional use each month. This will help me determine usage based on their role. I spend how much time using social media for PERSONAL USE each month.  The black and white personal and professional use is becoming more gray. I will be using this data to sit down and determine what employees consider personal versus professional time on social media channels. I kept the questions short, sweet and to the point because I want to get the highest completion rate possible so that I can dive into the specifics in future surveys, focus groups or other in person conversations. Most importantly, I want to establish a baseline and framework in which to work; a starting point from which to build  on employer brand, and  a social recruitment strategy that I can  grow. The  survey results are extremely important and Im planning to present preliminary results to the leadership team as soon as possible. I want to  begin developing a dialogue, and prepare for the challenges I might experience when  we  start making changes to the existing strategy and communication framework. The final results from this short survey will be presented in the next 30-45 days at which time I will repeat the process again as my client has four distinct business divisions as part of the larger company.

You can work in an assortment of jobs and use various ranges of abilities; there is consistently a chance to learn. Cons: Low compensation and normally extended periods of time. Results can be progressively hard to characterize, which adds to the weight referenced aboveit's harder to know whether you're really having any kind of effect. The result has higher stakes, as it is genuinely established. Raising money is a steady hustle; as this backings the whole association; everything relies upon it. These advantages and disadvantages are not really sweeping properties of all little, enormous and non-benefit organizations, yet can be utilized as a beginning stage for organization research. How to Recover After Saying Something You Regret

Instructions to Recover After Saying Something You Regret Have you at any point said or accomplished something without deduction and afterward thought twice about it? Possibly it was an enthusiastic upheaval. Or then again maybe you accomplished something mean when that is abnormal for you. Assuming this is the case, you're human. None of us is great. That is the reason it's so imperative to acknowledge when we aren't, pardon ourselves and afterward get directly in the groove again to being simply the best form that we expect to be. Particularly when this awful conduct wasn't purposeful. It begins with having the mindfulness to perceive what has occurred, at that point demonstrating the quality of character to concede you weren't right and fixed things. (Spoiler alert: the subsequent part is more diligently than the first!) It takes practice, however the upside is that you will have made the primary strides for transforming something awful into something great. As of late, I had one of those chances to practice when I found myself acting severely. My terrible conduct Toward the finish of another incredible CrossFit exercise, the ten of us were sitting around, prepared for the chill off stretches. Be that as it may, our mentor, Lucas, held conversing with one part â€" how about we call her Janet â€" about how to ace those dubious knees to elbows moves from the exercise. I could feel my muscles fixing and dreaded my lower back would seize up. Didn't Lucas realize that we were sitting still in a chilly exercise center with our sweat-soaked exercise garments causing it to feel colder constantly? When I was unable to stand it any longer, I proclaimed, Hello Lucas, would we be able to start the warm down as of now? When winning isn't generally winning He and Janet went to take a gander at me. At that point Lucas stated, OK we should extend. Triumph finally. However, as we began extending, the entire exercise center went calm. Nobody expressed gratitude toward me for making us move once more. Truth be told, the others would not like to take a gander at me. All things considered, they were presumably paralyzed. I'm normally the person who brings constructive vitality, not the person who drains the oxygen out of the room. As Suzy Welch says, there are two sorts of individuals â€" vitality providers and vitality takers â€" and I'm known for being the previous. I didn't understand how dreadful it would feel to get what I needed. At the point when you proclaim triumph yet feel terrible, it implies you didn't generally win. That is the point at which I realized what I needed to do. Self-amending conduct Before we began the following stretch, I stated, Lucas and Janet, I need to apologize for my conduct. I put my requirements in front of those of the gathering and I won't do that once more. Lucas grinned and stated, No concerns. It's previously. Another part kidded, May was mischievous! And my rec center mate Joe grinned at me and commented, Intriguing. Self-rectifying conduct. That is the point at which I understood how significant it was that I had said something. That I had apologized. Everybody in the class had seen my upheaval and narrow minded conduct. Possibly some of them were even appreciative? Who knows. In any case, that is not the point. You generally have a decision For this situation, I could have done any number of things â€" began extending all alone, stood by calmly like every other person, or gained from what Lucas was stating to Janet, to give some examples. As holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl brings up in his book Man's Search for Meaning, we generally have the opportunity to pick how we react to the circumstance we end up in. At first, I had picked a lesser reaction. Fortunately, mindfulness kicked in so I could make another opportunity to pick well. Mindfulness is vital The key is to have the common sense to know about what you're doing. At that time, I was depleted from an intense work out that I battled with. As opposed to being a terrible individual, I'd prefer to figure my mind needed more oxygen going through it to think straight! At the point when you unavoidably commit an error or accomplish something that you're not all that pleased with, the key is to then sorted things out and apologize genuinely once you've remembered it. Having an upheaval or terrible second is human. What you do after that is the thing that shows your actual character. Utilize your locale as a preparation ground for being as well as can be expected be This is one of the numerous reasons I love my CrossFit rec center. It's a wellspring of such a significant number of life exercises on the best way to carry on with others, how to be a piece of a network, how to support others, how to permit others to root for you. As my mom says, it's a little society. Furthermore, that allows us to rehearse and turn out to be better individuals. It doesn't need to be your exercise center. It could be your family, your work place, the essayists bunch you have a place with â€" these are little social orders. Use them all as a preparation ground for assisting with turning into the best individual you can be. What's more, returning to the point about being human, interestingly, while we're not bound to be great, we are equipped for getting the hang of, developing and improving. Also, a piece of this is settling on the decision to take part in self-remedying conduct and show your actual character. So you should? When have you shown self-rectifying conduct to transform something negative into a positive? Leave a remark â€" I'd love to know.

This is the type of stress thats actually good for you

This is the sort of stress that is in reality bravo This is the sort of stress that is in reality bravo I stress, you stress, we as a whole worry for eustress! What in the world is eustress? You may have heard this emotional well-being popular expression bandied around recently and considered how precisely it varies from standard old life-is-production me-insane pressure. In any case, in all honesty, eustress is a sort of stress that is in reality bravo. (That's right, that is a thing.) We addressed authorized proficient advocate Amanda Ruiz, MS of Pennsylvania's The Counseling Collective about how to recognize the eustresses throughout everyday life - and take advantage of them.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!DefinitionWith all we catch wind of pressure raising pulse, upsetting rest, and in any event, bringing on early death (yikes), it might be difficult to accept there's a sort of stress that really helps our psychological and physical wellbeing. So to comprehend eustress, y ou may need to disassemble some assumption. Basically, eustress is any sort of weight in our lives that really brings positive results.Eustress is the typical measure of pressure that you feel while doing a positive test, something you feel moderately competent in finishing, clarifies Ruiz. Cheerful, thrilling occasions throughout everyday life, such as having an infant or beginning another relationship despite the fact that they feel better, make their own sort of weight on the body and mind. All things considered, a portion of similar hormones - like adrenalin and cortisol - associated with dread are additionally present in the midst of energy. Accordingly, encountering something exciting or testing, for example, riding a crazy ride, finishing an extreme venture at work, or purchasing another home, brings a particular sort of pressure. The advantages of eustressThis pressure, however it might in fact qualify as stress, is shockingly bravo. At the point when we embrace something tro ublesome, it's an open door for self-improvement, regardless of whether we succeed or fall flat. Also, change, a typical wellspring of stress, adds a touch of zest to life. Eustress keeps life energizing, says Ruiz. Without it, you may get exhausted, smug, and need motivation.Plenty of research has taken a gander at the emotional impacts of positive versus negative pressure. The right equalization of stress has been appeared to build readiness and psychological execution, just as keep us progressively versatile. A 2015 study found that individuals with significant levels of good pressure had less exhaustion in the first part of the day and for the duration of the day than the individuals who experienced pain (AKA negative pressure). And another, directed on understudies, found an association between the degree of eustress and by and large life satisfaction. When is it eustress and when is it destress? So when is it distress and when is it eustress? Regularly, trouble causes us to feel on edge and overpowered. Eustress, then again, brings a sentiment of energy, achievement, or a test acknowledged. (The eu originates from a Greek word signifying great, well, charming, or valid, as in rapture.) Making slices to your spending plan, for instance, could be a misery if it's a battle to make a decent living - or could be a positive if it's to put something aside for your spring break outing to Italy. On the off chance that you feel equipped to adapt to the upsetting occasion, at that point you are in all likelihood encountering eustress, says Ruiz. In the event that you question your capacity to adapt to it, and rather in the event that feels upsetting, at that point it's presumably distress.Turning trouble into eustressFeel like a large portion of the stressors throughout your life are the caring that cut you down? There's expectation! Your outlook could go far toward really changing conditions you see as trouble into eustress. A 2013 study found that subjects' contemp lations about their own pressure majorly affected their physical experience of it. In one module of the investigation, subjects were met about whether they saw life stressors as improving or incapacitating. In another, they were demonstrated recordings that surrounded the idea of worry as both of these two descriptors. Phrases to delete from your resume and LinkedIn profile - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Phrases to delete from your resume and LinkedIn profile - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach I still remember my shock at seeing clichés similar to “I can work on my own initiative as well as part of a team’ in 19 out of 20 applications I’ve received for the first role I was recruiting for when I started my recruitment career 10 years ago. Even now, I often receive resumes with phrases such as ‘Self-motivated team player’; “responsible” or “innovative”. If your resume if full of these mundane and boring phrases (with no examples to back them up with!) it is going to be difficult for you to stand out or for recruiters to really see your value proposition. It is not that certain ‘power words’ can’t be used on your resume. But you want to use them effectively so that you don’t sound like everyone else. The problem is these words are very subjective. Anyone can say they are efficient or well organized or that they have great leadership skills. NOTHING about that makes you stand out from the competition unless you show some examples. Here are some tips on how to improve your resume/LinkedIn profile: Use evidence and concrete examples to back up your statements. Let’s suppose you’re an internal auditor who’s implemented new payroll and tax accounting systems that saved your company $200k in staff costs over the next 3 years. It is a result driven example that demonstrates you being innovative or good at problem solving. Perhaps you’re an admin assistant and you’ve managed switchboard with 8 incoming lines, routing an average of 300 calls per day. You immediately sound more impressive than a candidate who simply says they have great organizational skills. I see lots of resumes of people who are ‘results-driven’. Says who? I’d suggest adding some information that actually PROVES your drive for results. In which ways has your performance outpaced that of your peers? Perhaps you’ve earned 3 promotions in 18 months. If so, put that information on your resume. Use numbers. Numbers are great for demonstrating your skills and expertise. Did you increase revenue, saved time or money? How many events did you organize? How many clients did you deal with every month? Another clichéd quote I see on resumes is ‘proven success’ or ‘proven track record’. Again, unless you prove it, I wouldn’t bother with such phrases. If you’ve exceeded quota every year for the past 3 years or finished all projects under budget, then mention that. These tangible achievements will help a hiring person understand the scope of your work and the reasons behind your career progression. To summarize, remove all redundant phrases from your resume and LinkedIn profile. Provide specific details of your achievements and watch your interview invites go up! How to give a pep talk that actually works

The most effective method to give a motivational speech that really works The most effective method to give a motivational speech that really works We've all been forced to bear an unconvincing motivational speech. The speaker's heart is plainly in the ideal spot, peppering us with positive messages of You'll get past this! and Don't stress, everything will be okay! But we remained unconvinced. To get us to really put stock in the consolation we are hearing, obscure commendations and harsh inspirations are insufficient, another examination distributed in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance recommends. They found that a self-governance strong approach, which stresses mental opportunity and self-commencement, works greater at rousing us than controlling, constraining motivation. The real love of you should get past this won't overcome as noisily as I realize that you have the devices to traverse this troublesome time, since I have seen your creativity firsthand. What a decent motivational speech sounds likeThe specialists found that by underlining apparent decision and lower apparent weight, the i ndependence steady motivational speeches helped individuals feel near each other and like they had more options with their situation. We don't feel persuaded by hearing everything will be okay, yet we do feel spurred when somebody advises us that our destiny is in our grasp. At the point when somebody is experiencing a work emergency, the cliché of everything will be okay may not be valid. What can feel genuine is being helped to remember your versatility to deal with whatever comes your way. You can't foresee somebody's future, yet you can give expectation and comfort to get ready for its uncertainty. This approach follows what psychotherapists and vocation specialists as of now suggest for motivational speeches: keep away from buzzwords and attest the individual's qualities. You need the individual to feel like you are really tuning in to them. That begins with customizing your persuasive motivational speech past expansive buzzwords of time recuperates all wounds. The best motivatio nal speech is reminding somebody what they definitely think about themselves, in light of your insight into them, William J. Doherty, a family sociology educator, suggests. Additionally, perceive that a motivational speech doesn't need to be about you talking. Once in a while, the best motivational speech is the brief uh-huh, uh-huh, I hear you of tuning in and being available for what somebody needs to get off their mind.

3 techniques for networking at big events

3 strategies for systems administration at huge occasions 3 strategies for systems administration at huge occasions As of late, I went to the Puget Sound Business Journals yearly Book of Lists occasion, held at Seattles delightful Museum of Flight. It was an enormous social event, so I talked with participants for their experiences on systems administration at large occasions. Who was it that didnt have a fabulous time? All things considered, outrageous loners. In truth, most loners likely didnt register to go to in any case. Be that as it may, for the individuals who overcame the crowds of individuals, it was presumably testing to start some new expert connections. I found a couple of individuals remaining in a dull corner behind the bar, professing to check email. Others were walking around the historical center show imagining there was no occasion going on in the primary lobby. That is alright, I give them praise for at any rate going. Yet, for every other person, there appeared to be three principle methodologies that functioned admirably: 1. Have a systems administration objective My first inquiry was, Why are you here? Also, I got the norm, Oh, this is a pleasant occasion at an extraordinary scene. Be that as it may, when I followed with, What are you wanting to escape organizing here? at that point the appropriate responses got significantly more intriguing and important. Tony Yee, VP at Umpqua Bank, needed to make individuals mindful of his bank and to meet more individuals. Taji Degross, a Windermere Real Estate agent, is an ongoing Puget Sound Business Journal endorser and came to see whats going on in the Seattle people group. Darrin Evans, an estimator with Snyder, is new to his industry because of an ongoing profession change. In this way, he is anxious to meet temporary workers and others in the development business. Kate Chan is a prime supporter of the Seattle Women in Technology (WIT) association, and despite the fact that she additionally makes some full-memories work, she resulted in these present circumstances occasion to discover future speakers for WIT just as future individuals. By and large, every one of these participants had an objective when it came to systems administration, and they had enough attention to perceive and propel that objective without being pushy. 2. Approach all out outsiders Amusingly, the greater the occasion, the harder it is to meet all out outsiders, and significantly increasingly troublesome in the event that you have a particular focused on need like Evans, who was searching for those in the development business. I approached him for his top stunt and he said that he depended on the informal IDs. That can be precarious, the same number of individuals were conversing with others, so name identifications arent simple to see. Andrea Driesen, Chief Boredom Buster without any Boring Meetings wears a catch on her lapel that says NO BOREDOM and that is an incredible friendly exchange. She suggested looking open and making proper acquaintance. Nearly everybody said they look and make proper acquaintance, however it takes one individual to stop and make a presentation! 3. Know the difficulties Systems administration methods are not just about realizing what individuals do effectively. Some of the time simply hearing the difficulties that even the most experienced organizers face is useful. In the many systems administration occasions I have joined in, some have been very fulfilling and others were essentially duds. There are such a large number of elements, running from the occasion design to my own disposition that day or night. A few difficulties that participants can confront are realizing when to break into an apparently settled gathering, discovering something in like manner, keeping up a decent demeanor and being available to new thoughts. Another difficulties can be leaving a discussion effortlessly. For certain individuals, flaunting a cordial and friendly character can be confused as being a tease, so its critical to ensure you underline that youre there to manufacture proficient connections. Separating useful tidbits There are numerous approaches to make large occasions work for you. Here are five that I got that Ill use at future occasions: Be intrigued, not fascinating Be the one to begin the discussion, approach gatherings and present yourself Have a couple go-to questions that you like to inquire. Mine is, What carried you to this specific occasion? Continuously have bunches of business cards and request cards on the off chance that they are not offered; if your contact is out of cards, record the data Associate with those you met on LinkedIn inside 24 hours and solicitation a subsequent gathering to start constructing a drawn out relationship What are your enormous occasion organizing tips and difficulties?

New Israeli Startups Software To Make Recruiters Redundant By 2015

New Israeli Startup's Software To Make Recruiters Redundant By 2015 45 The system will save companies billions of dollars, estimates co-founder Nir Atsman. This was an April Fools' joke in 2012: QTRecruit™ to be launched later this month after undergoing extensive beta testing for almost a year. “We were surprised no one else discovered this first,” founder Nir Atsman says.eval “We thought of calling it something trendy like ‘iRecruit' or something obvious like ‘ezRecruit', but those names have already been taken, explains Yaron Cohen, the other co-founder. And since the manpower commander in our old army unit was a cutie, we thought “cutie = qt!” Nir and Yaron are both former soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces' world-renown Unit 8200, rumored to be (partially?) responsible for the Stuxnet virus that damaged Iranian nuclear installations in 2010. While serving in 8200, they designed QTRecruit's precursor, a system that automatically decides where in the Israeli army to place new IDF recruits.eval How does it work? “Not to get too technical,” responds Yaron, “but the system spiders the Internet, like Google, gathering information about relevant candidates for a client's open positions. In parallel, the client continuously feeds criteria into the system about the best kinds of candidates. Using some soon-to-be-patented artificial intelligence technologies and machine learning algorithms that we developed, the system learns over time how to find better candidates.” What is the system's placement success rate? “Over 80% and improving all the time,” says Nir. “It hasn't yet learned to predict how a good candidate will react when they have a competing offer from another company.” What will happen to all the recruiters that will be replaced by the software? Yaron answers “if you're a recruiter, I'm sure everything will be ok,” later adding, “you'll probably need to retrain but don't worry, there are always jobs for good people.” He also points out that QTRecruit keeps a few ex-recruiters on staff to help them keep the system up-to-date. For more information about QTRecruit™, visit the company website at qtrecruit.com. They are currently based in the Tel Aviv area.

Are People More Important Than Projects in the Workplace - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Are People More Important Than Projects in the Workplace - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The current workplace We know the future of the workplace is going to be virtual. We have started seeing this already with the mobile web, as well as the cloud and Second Life. The logic is that at the end of the day, companies just want the work done. They dont care how it gets done, as long as the output is of high quality and delivered in a timely manner (deadlines). The workplace is filled with legacy channels, operations, tools and a hierarchy that has lasted since before I was even born. The economy is a bullet into the workplace and the only healing is to soothe employees wounds by giving them flexibility. In a survey of 539 U.S. workers, 44% of respondents said higher gas prices have affected their commutes, up from 34% two years ago when a similar survey was conducted. 44% of those respondents who have altered their work arrangements. One-third said they are driving a more fuel-efficient vehicle. In addition, 33% said they are telecommuting more frequently. Where you get work done is less important these days, than if the work gets done. People wont be asking why do you work remotely 3 years from now. Instead, they will scratch their head as to why someone wouldnt work remotely. People In order to complete projects, you need people. People are the most expensive assets in a company. The utilization of human assets is important with project management and the overall success and completion of a project. When projects arent finished on time, people tend to get fired, especially if its a high profile project that affects the bottom line or impacts the end user (customer). Within the people matrix, you have connections and relationships that sway the emotions, attitudes and way of approaching and managing a project. Depending on the project goals, an assortment of people are attached to it and are subject to completing it on time. When a single person is tasked with an entire project, he or she almost becomes the project. Projects To many, the end result of a project is all they care about. Executives within a company arent concerned as much with who it gets done, as long as it does. The end of a project, typically means the start of another. Projects solve problems or create problems, depending on people and external factors. A project is usually measured based on a variety of factors. Some projects dont finish because of other priorities that surface. Personal brand vs corporate brand Its all about who you know just about every parent in the world. While the company may be entirely focused on driving revenues and cuttings costs for the corporation, the individual cares about building relationships with teammates. People also care about how the results of a project might entitle them to be promoted at work. It might just turn out to be another line in a resume. If you think about your latest project, do you care more about the people you are working with or the outcome of the project? In my opinion you need both. Collaboration builds stronger rapport and projects are great resume builders. Twitter responses Thank you for your responeses @JessicaBahr, @JonBurg, @Despil, @Amandachapel and @krishnade. Before you write your next blog post, poll your Twitter followers to assess your ideas. For this post, I surveyed my followers and received five answers. Jessica values projects over people, while Jon sees them both as having different purposes. Despil agrees with Jessica and both Amanda and Krishna value income/profits. If you would like to follow me on Twitter, my address is @DanSchawbel and maybe you will get one of these opportunities in the future. When you register your username on Twitter, try and keep it to your full name for personal branding purposes.

What we really are  excited about is Shauna introduced us to a new kind of diet that we had never heard of before. Its called a YES DIET (www.30daysofno.com),  a 30-day lifestyle cleanse to help us get rid of the word YES.  We also very much agree with her that saying no more can help us stay focused on our true values and purpose in our careers and life. So today we dig a little deeper into what success means to her, how she moved past frustrations in her life and her all-time favorite books! Name: Shauna Mackenzie Titles:  Speaker, Content Marketer, and Communication Specialist Education:  Gonzaga University  (MA) and  University of Iowa  Bachelor of Arts (BA)   Website:  www.bestkeptself.com What does success mean to you? Being able to do the things that I love, with the people that I love, in a place that I love. Success is about a lifestyle, not a destination, and always has been for me. When I feel I have the freedom to do these things, I feel successful. How do you balance work with your everyday life? Over the years, I’ve learned to really listen to my body. I’m a believer that it functions to keep us in balance and when you feel off, it may be time to shift the weights and a take a break. Sometimes that means a break for a day. Sometimes that means a break for a week. I don’t operate much on routine so I’ll have intensive weeks of long workdays but then be able to coast for a few days because I just did more in a week than most would probably do in a month. I think knowing if you’re a routine person is key and also knowing that there’s not a right and wrong â€" so long as you feel good about what you are doing. I also know that I do best when I can match my work activities to the mood I’m in so that I don’t have to feel forced or pressured to do or not do things. That helps me to stay productive and efficient. What motivates you to work hard? Other people’s success. Not in a competitive way but an inspiring way. Whenever I feel stuck, frustrated, or in a biz rut, I just have to look outward and at the accomplishments of others. I find that so energizing. Did you have any frustrations along the way on your career journey? How did you move past those? Of course but they were opportunities in disguise. One of the biggest areas of frustration was realizing 3 years into my business that my personal interests in terms of what I liked to do within it had changed. Meaning, I found myself veering away from the client work and wanting to operate more IN my business, passing the client work off to other team members. This was a hard realization to come to because before I realized the truth of it, I thought I had made a mistake. I wasn’t seeing that I was simply evolving â€" I saw it as a bad thing. Like I either had to make it work because I started down this path (which would make me miserable â€" I attempted that for a brief moment) or start something new (which seemed overwhelming). Well, I didn’t have to do either. I was able to find a different way to work in what I already created. That took vision, delegation, and really being honest with myself and what I wanted. What is your all-time favorite book? Wow, this is a tough one to answer. I can’t pick just one so I’ll do non-fiction first: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. And for fiction, I love House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski â€" brilliantly composed and a style unlike anyone else you’ve ever read. What is your favorite vacation spot? Also a tough one to pick just one! For cold weather, I love Asheville’s Grove Park Inn in North Carolina. It’s my cozy haven for relaxation. For tropical, the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas has been my favorite island spot I’ve been to. What is your favorite restaurant/food? Sushi, sushi, sushi. Take me to a sushi restaurant and we’ll be best friends for life. What was your first job? I worked in the dining room for an assisted living center as a waitress in high school. My first and only job all the way through high school. What is your favorite TV show? The Office for when I need a pick-me-up, Sex And The City when I need a background show while working, and Breaking Bad in terms of most-captivating show I’ve ever watched. What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend? Be a tourist in my own city, Charleston, South Carolina. Whether that be going out to eat, taking a walk, or going to a play, I love spending time in the city I live.
